Residents of The Hunter Arms apartment complex discover one day that one of their fellows tenants, a paranoid recluse known simply as "Mr. G", has mysteriously disappeared. What's more, all signs seem to indicate that he has been missing for several weeks, leaving his apartment completely vacant ..save for a couple scraps of paper found in his living room. Further discoveries reveal a loose floorboard in which his neighbors find a crazy journal, documenting Jeremy Gurn's bizarre view of the world and revealing that he was a conspiracy theory nut. It soon becomes clear that in order to unravel this mystery and determine the whereabouts of Mr. G, his neighbors will need to start thinking like him to pick up the trail.

Talk is a-brewing of what to do after the hunt winds down Saturday afternoon. Though it's not happened every time and it hasn't been in any way official, there has been an occasional (and pretty small-scale) after event get-together when the hunt wraps up.
Check out what's being discussed and chime in!
:: gh8 attendees & new staff
Check out the attendees list of the grunt hunt livejournal community to see who's planning on coming to this next hunt. A list of tentative teams will be forthcoming so that spares can find out who to team with ahead of time.
This hunt we'll be graced once again with the assistance of the lovely Miss Miss Diane as well as newcomer to the admin side, the fabulous Miss Christa. Please welcome Christa to ..the few, the tired, and the ones with all the answers... the grunt hunt staff. Woo!
:: gh8 invites sent
Invitations have been sent out for hunt participants, both new and old. Confirmed numbers can be found at the top of the page here.
As usual, it is highly advisable not to amass an all-newbie team. In fact, let's just save everyone some heartache and say ourtight that all-newbie teams are not at all allowed to participate in the hunt any more. Official rules will be updated to reflect this.
Have a friend or two that's interested in playing? Invite 'em along for the fun and let us know!
:: gh8 date set & the fate of winning team members
The next hunt is now set for saturday, april 28, 2007. Actual invites probably won't be sent out for another couple weeks but it's always good to plan ahead.
In other news, be on the lookout for a general request for some semblance of staff assistance. Last time, the hunt ran (eerily) smooth if not for the fact that A> the puzzles were a lot more doable that time around and B> three people (myself included) were running things. For those of you who have participated in previous hunts, gh7's remarkable lack of lines to submit answers, request hints or get challenges was no doubt memorable. It was downright uncanny but, allthesame, it was pretty frickin' stress-free. So, naturally, that sort of smooth operation is the goal for this hunt and future hunts as well.
That said, starting next hunt, winning teams have the opportunity to help out with the running (and possibly the planning) of the following hunt. This is in no way mandatory, of course, but given that people have mentioned an interest in the goings-on of the hunt from the admin side as well as expressed a selfless desire to help out should the need be there, the opportunity is being put out there for the eager. As an added bonus, it makes things nicer for everyone else not having to worry about the previous winners just sweeping in and taking first place yet again.
So, yay, morale!
:: gh8 - plans are afoot!
People weren't sure if the announcement that the hunt would be annual was a serious one but sure enough, October (the usual month for the fall hunt) has come and gone without any mention of team based puzzle competitions from us guys. (Sorry!) But now that we're nearing annual hunt time, dates are being figured out.
Our contenders: apr 21 or apr 28 (both, of course, Saturdays).
Speak up about which of the two you would prefer over in the livejournal community!
:: extended website family
More edits have been made to the site. Like all over the place. Especially in the rules section! Look around - you might notice a couple things. Other cosmetic changes to the site will be occurring over the course of the next few weeks (as time permits, really). They don't all require a separate news update, so keep a look out!
One thing in particular you might notice, however, is that the hunt site is now utilizing flickr.com's excellent photo hosting site for all the pictures taken at the event. To visit the grunt hunt's very own flickr page, click here. You can even leave comments on the individual photos if you have your own flickr account!
Currently we are accepting suggestions for gh8's theme. Go to the hunt's livejournal community page to see what ideas have been submitted or simply go there to submit your own! Plans for other community-based posts also include a rehashing of all the puzzles that made up gh7 (as well as their solutions). If you don't have a livejournal account, go get one! (They're free!) As these posts won't be available to the public, you'll need an account to view them.
It's kind of funny how the hunt site is stretching out to include other sites like livejournal, flickr, cafepress and even paypal. One day, it will all reside on one website. One day..
:: announcements and site updates
As it was revealed at grunt hunt 7, the hunt will now occur annually instead of twice a year. Hopefully this will accomplish a lot in the preservation of sanity and the enhancement of production quality. Additionally, having the hunt once a year will make the launching of gruntwerk as a business venture a very possible and very do-able thing.
A great many changes and updates are being applied to various parts of the site. Additionally, materials from the last hunt are slowly being collected from the various attendees. If you have photos or any other materials that should be showcased on this site, send them off to Miller or Kristina so that they can get published here.
Areas of the site that will no doubt see updates and changes include: the hunt pages, the ack board, the complete hunt roster, the winner's table, the glossary of terms, the faq, trivia, links, and gameplay.
More to come..

The city of Macropolis is taken over by an alien insectoid/robotic race, wiping out the city's team of superheroes as their first step in their attempts to blow up the world with an intergalactic doomsday device currently in orbit around the Earth! News of this tragedy reach a neighboring suburb which just happens to be hosting an annual sidekick convention. With the local heroes out of commission, the sidekicks have to save the city in order to save the world. Doing so gives them the opportunity to become the city's new champions.. but they'll have to duke it out with the other sidekicks in the process.

:: gh7 on the horizon
Don't let the radio silence of the last couple weeks fool you. Things have been busy in the development of the hunt. As we are rapidly approaching the event date of Saturday, April 8, things will no doubt get even busier. Stay abreast of what's going on behind-the-scenes by visiting the grunt hunt livejournal community.
:: save the date for gh7
Being two months before the event, planning is already underway. We are pleased to announce two developments with regard to the grunt hunt. Firstly, The official date of the next grunt hunt is apr 8, 2006. Same details as last time but, ya know, a whole new set of puzzles. Be excited!
Secondly, Kristina has been enlisted to not only help out with the admin side of the grunt hunt but also with production and to serve as event staff the day of the hunt. What a trooper! We're looking to draw as much assistance from volunteers as possible (without revealing too much to those who will be participating) to provide as smooth a gameplay experience as we can. Look forward to it!
More details to come. Are you ready?
:: gearing up for action
In preparation for gh7, some updates have been made to the site: the hunts section has been broken up to give each individual event its own page, a couple questions have been added to the faq, a couple more sites have been added to the links page, there's more trivia, and other little changes have been made here and there (mainly linking and text edits).
A major change is the addition of a grunt hunt livejournal community. If you're a registered livejournal user, please feel free to join up! There, you will get the opportunity to come across unofficial announcements, news, discussions, and other behind-the-scenes stuff. There may even be the occasional puzzle posted as well.
The official start date for working on gh7 is February. More things to come..
:: site updates
More updates made to the site.
In the interest of clarity and organization, the gameplay section has been cleaned up some. Staff maneuvering has brought some change to the contact page. A PayPal donation link has been added to the about and links page (if'n you feel so inclined to throw money at us for all our hard work and dashing good looks). And speaking of the links page, a couple more line items have been added. In particular, if you're interested in getting better at doing nonagrams, check out TylerK's Picross. It's a little flash application that lets you complete nonagrams online. Great opportunity to practice, don't you think?
Again, if you have any photos from the last hunt that want sharing, drop us a line and we'll post 'em here. Also, if any of you veteran hunters know of any other FAQs, links, or tips that should go up on the site, let us know.
:: gh6 stuff
Materials from this last hunt are in the process of going up on the site. If you (or your team) should happen to have any photos from the event, please send them Miller's way so that they can be shared and viewed by all.
Current updates include: news (you're looking at 'em), more rules revisions (openers give you points now), hunt info, gh6 photos, the ack board, the winner's table, and the hunt roster.

Victor Timonius-Guy bought an entire manor for dirt cheap but soon discovers that this real estate acquisition wasn't his best idea. It turns out that what he winds up with are the remains of a reform school that mysteriously closed its doors six months after they first opened. Eventually, he finds out that a gruesome mass murder took place on these grounds and the tormented souls that arose from such an event haven't quite left yet. It's up to the hunters, armed with a ouija board and whatever items they find in the mansion as well as the grounds, to find out what exactly happened here 20 or so years ago.

- Flesh Eating Virus

:: gameplay revisions
In the interest of balance, rules have been modified once again. In particular values for scoring have changed. Wrong answer penalties have gone up by a factor of four and bonus points have pretty much all gone up as well. Needless to say, the PDF rulesets have been updated as well.
Only 11 days until gh6. Are you ready for it?
:: gh6 date change and site updates
First and foremost, due to increased pressure to do so, the hunt is now scheduled to run Sunday, October 30. This turns out to be a far more convenient date for a lot more people and allows a large portion of those who originally were unable to attend the opportunity to participate now. Sadly, a small handful of people are no longer able to attend because of the change. They will be missed. But since the hunt is a semi-annual event, there's always the spring hunt to look forward to...
In other news, the site updates are 99% complete. PDF versions of rules are now available, photos from gh5 are now viewable, a glossary of terms has been set up, example puzzles are now live, and there's even a faq now! Some sections can use your input! If you have any suggestions for any Helpful Tips, Links, Hunt Trivia, or Example Puzzles.. give a holler.
:: a new look
Big site update - the grunt hunt website has been given a makeover! What with the increased popularity of the hunt in recent months, it was only fitting to give it a look that spoke more to the people who participated in it than merely be a collection of plain and boring text pages. (I hope certain people don't mind that they appear in the headers now...)
With the site update, new features are available: the hunts section documents and details each of the previous events, contextual info/navigation has been squeezed into the lefthand sidebar, and now there's more stuff! grunt hunt trivia! Glossary of hunt terms (coming soon)! PDF downloads of rules (coming soon)! Sitemap goodness! Other stuff (coming soon)!
Due to so large a redesign, however, certain parts of the site had to be taken down in order to reorganize and retool them to better fit with the current state of the site. You'll find links that don't work (mostly in the archive) as well as links that aren't active yet. But no worries, all will return to working order soon enough.
Enjoy the friendlier site!
:: gh6 date is set
The official date of the next grunt hunt is october 29, 2005. Got a team yet? Have you pre-registered yet?
More details to come.
:: gh6 planning commences
The beginning of gh6 plans are currently under way. Tentative dates entertained are oct22 and oct29 (with previous hunters weighing in on which date they prefer). From here on out the theme for the upcoming hunts will be disclosed beforehand in an effort to entice people into playing for the first time or to simply come back to play again. Granted, it won't be too, too revealing - don't want to give it away, after all.
This hunt involves the players being trapped in a creepy abondoned house, the mystery surrounding the brutal murder (nay, slaughter) that colors its dark and creepy history and dealing with the torturous haunting that's going on all at the same time.
:: gh5 photos
Site updates. Photos of gh5, namely. More to come.
:: grand opening
The grunt hunt official online store is now open for business. Drop on by and see if there's anything you'd like to purchase. The markup on each of the items is only a few bucks here and there and, as a result, you'll be buying them pretty close to their regular ticket price. Incidentally, grunt hunt 5 has its own online store. Check that out as well. Please feel free to make suggestions as to what you'd like to see in there and we'll see what we can do to accomodate.
in other news, a veritable whirlwind of updates have been made to this website. Key locales include: gameplay, links, stuff, and, if you notice, store is now a link in the left navbar.
:: gh5 stuff
gh5-related materials as well as team rosters and acknowledgements have been posted with more to come when participants email their photos and whatever other things that they would like to see up on this site. Changes to the rules governing oversized teams have also been posted and the news page now has an archive for some of the older posts. More example puzzles will be posted shortly. Plans for the online store for tshirts and the like are now go! Stay tuned.

The only problem is: everyone who's been involved in any of the cases has mysteriously disappeared or suffered a weird accident.. such that the only ones left to conduct the investigation are the interns.
